Location. Following substantial refurbishment, the present-day Kalkscheune premises feature rooms of different size located around a greened up inner courtyard.

The Kalkscheune premises are the only surviving continuous complex of buildings of the former Berlin Barn District. The Kalkscheune was for the first time mentioned in a Berlin fire insurance of 1831. Documents and indications would suggest, however, that the building had been erected before the construction of the Brandenburg Gate.

At this site, Master machine builder Johann Caspar Hummel erected his machine works which made him one of the outstanding trailblazers of the industrial revolution in Berlin. Cavalry barracks posted at the site of today’s Friedrichstadtpalast had their horses stabled at Kalkscheune, and later the machine works became the location of the Prussian bicycle manufactory, inaugurated by Queen Auguste Viktoria.

Die KALKSCHEUNE is located right in the heart of Berlin, in walking distance of Brandenburg Gate.
